While the traditional architectural form is without doubt very beautiful, it doesn’t satisfy contemporary expectations of comfort. Occasionally, we are asked to design and construct the old style, which we are happy to do, but we find that most clients prefer living with the comfort of basic modern amenities like furniture, electricity and central heating. This particular structure presents a more modern take on the traditional minka.

Many such inhabitants comprise the Japanese elderly community living quietly and on their own. Because of its natural components, the tatami mat can also absorb carbon dioxide from the air. This makes it a natural air purifier without having to resort to chemical fresheners and sprays. Whether it’s the vibrant glow of ‘Friends’ or the melancholic ‘One For Sorrow, Two For Joni Jones’, the album details moments of pure optimism, grief and loss from Bain’s immediate experiences and relationships. With the magic touch of producer Chloe Kraemer – Bain’s first time working with another queer woman – the album sprung into life, as she had found a safe space in which she could channel those conflicting emotions. Repository, built in 2012 and conceived by Jun Igarashi Architects, sits on the outskirts of Asahikawa, on northern Japan's Hokkaido island.

Not only is it a functional and necessary means of building a Minka, but also acts as a sound design feature of the home. As you’ll see on the majority of Minka’s, a fully functional, wrap-around hallway of sorts. Not only constructed for the enjoyment and protection from the outdoor elements, but also used in a more traditional sense as a divider between the exterior and interior of the Shoji. A Shoji as a sliding panel or wall can be found in both the interior and exterior of a traditional Minka.
