The en-no-shita is a crawl space under the veranda or floor, created to provide ventilation and reduce humidity inside the house. Some are completely enclosed with baseboards to prevent dead leaves and debris from accumulating under the house, while others have gaps between the boards to improve airflow. This is a favourite place for cats and dogs to retreat from the heat of the day. A uniquely constructed Minka typically involves the use of Wagoya; a method of carpentry performed without the use of nails. Instead, complex wood joints are structurally formed post and beams are held together by specialized joinery.
While the traditional architectural form is without doubt very beautiful, it doesn’t satisfy contemporary expectations of comfort. Occasionally, we are asked to design and construct the old style, which we are happy to do, but we find that most clients prefer living with the comfort of basic modern amenities like furniture, electricity and central heating. This particular structure presents a more modern take on the traditional minka.
